Are you considering how to serve your community, and planning to start a nonprofit?


Or have you already organized a group but feel unsure that the organization is really functioning properly?

Our How to Start a Nonprofit training will focus on the legal basics of establishing and maintaining a nonprofit.

WHO SHOULD REGISTER?

• Community leaders who are currently members of, or plan to start, a small nonprofit organization.

• Any organization seeking legal assistance through Community Law Center with an issue related to organizational formation, as attendance at the workshop is required before the organization will be assigned an attorney through Community Law Center.

Are you a small nonprofit incorporated in Maryland? If so, this workshop is for you! Find out how to determine whether your annual filings are in order. We will discuss good standing with the state of Maryland, IRS 990-Ns, charitable registration, and more.

If you have additional questions regarding your organization after the workshop, attorneys from Community Law Center will be available for free brief legal advice consultations by phone or email. Groups may also be eligible to apply for free legal services.

Cost to attend the workshop

The cost for one person to attend the workshop is $55.

Accessing the workshop

This is an online workshop presented in real-time, so you have the chance to participate and ask questions. Information to access the Zoom workshop will be sent a few hours prior to the start time.

Cancellations and Refunds

Refunds will be accepted up to 48 hours before the workshop. If you, or your designee, do not attend the workshop you signed up for, the fee is non-refundable.

Required Declaration Forms
Registrants will need to complete a brief form declaring the average household income for the organization (not for any individual). This paperwork is required by our funders for Community Law Center to keep in our records for informational purposes only.

About the Presenter

Phil envisions a legal career of serving local organizations, particularly those interested in structuring themselves cooperatively. He joined the Community Law Center in the fall of 2025 and is a staff attorney, after graduating summa cum laude from the University of Baltimore School of Law and was an associate comments editor on the school’s Law Review, as well as a teaching and research assistant for multiple professors. Phil had previously earned a Bachelor’s in linguistics and German studies, as well as a Master’s of Education, both from University of Maryland, College Park.
