This workshop will cover what 501(c)(3) nonprofits need to know about lobbying and political advocacy, including during an election season.
In this workshop, we will cover:
- What are lobbying and political advocacy?
- What do 501(c)(3) nonprofits need to know if they are considering doing lobbying and advocacy?
- Federal and state regulation of 501(c)(3) lobbying
- Foundation funding issues related to lobbying
- How to respond to political candidates when they approach your organization
- Why, despite the hurdles and requirements, nonprofits might still want to do advocacy and lobbying!

About the Presenters

Shana Roth-Gormley has been with the Community Law Center since 2014. Ms. Roth-Gormley has overseen the Pro Bono Program and taught many of Community Law Center’s workshops on nonprofit formation and governance, and vacant and nuisance properties. She also represents nonprofit clients and advocates for systemic change on issues of tax sale and vacant and abandoned properties. She is a graduate of the UCLA School of Law and a member of the Maryland Bar.
