NYT: The Battlefront in the Front Yard

A short post this week before the winter holidays begin:

The New York Times ran a story this week on urban gardeners who are fighting against both city bureaucrats and neighbors to keep their crops. The issue brings together unlikely allies: libertarians from groups like Institute for Justice and progressive sustainability advocates.

It’s an interesting look at the American history of the lawn, which the article describes as the United States’ “civic religion.”

How should cities and neighbors address this age-old tension between wanting control over the aesthetics of neighborhoods and the property rights of individual owners? What do you think?
